WASPS logoMy whole Saturday was spent in front of my laptop. It happened to be a rainy day here in Los Banos so it was a good time to stay indoors. In fact, it was the best time to indulge in extra sleep time or to simply wallow in bed that we altogether missed our regular Saturday exercise routine and opted for a 10am session of dance exercise in front of the computer that was playing the videos we follow. The rest of the day was spent cracking my head trying to figure out how to make changes in the site’s layout and install certain features, as I am no website developer. To top it all, I was not contented with just this website, I also changed the theme and layout of our parenting blog.  That’s in two different platforms, wordpress and blogger, respectively.

Regarding layout, the size of our banner was reduced to show more information above the first fold when you land on any page of the site.  This allowed the insertion of a new feature “the community news” just below the navigation buttons when you land on the home page.  The tab color throughout was modified to green from the original olive green and ads would now come out when appropriate.

The community news feature not only provides scoops, updates, trivia and other information about insects and stuff that would be interesting and/or useful to the Insect Experts community and visitors, but it’s also a way for you to submit updates or share a scoop that you found in the internet.  Anyone can do it, just use this submission form.  There’s also a navigation button for easy access to the community news (and submission form) just below the “have fun” words at the bottom of the banner.  The first two scoops are about spy insects and artists as insects.  Check it out.

Also installed this week is the LinkWithin feature at the bottom of each blog post that invites readers to view posts related to the topic they just finished reading.

There’s more improvements to come so I’d greatly appreciate it if you give me feedback on the functionality of the new features: i.e. whether or not they work on your end, or if you simply do or don’t like them.  It can then be called an “improvement” if it adds value instead of diminish it.  There’s a box at the top right sidebar for you to rate the new layout.  Please vote and try all new features as well.  Thanks.

As for offline activities, our participation in the upcoming Pest Management Council of the Philippines annual conference in Bacolod was confirmed this week.  We’ll write about it next week.

That’s the week that WASPS ;)
