WASPS logoThe week leading to the super moon put indelible memories or influence in many of us. A whole slew of people experienced unimaginable tragedies and forced a country yet to recover from the recent economic slump on its knees again. The super earthquake and the tsunami plus radiation leak that followed reminded humans of our vulnerability to natural calamities. The week also saw modern communication technologies as double-edged in facilitating information dissemination as the whole range of news and reactions were easily spread– from the blow-by-blow accounts of the catastrophes in Japan to the hoax warning Filipinos of radiation to hit their country in a few hours; and from the prayers, messages of sympathy and global actions intended to aid victims to the ignorance, narrow-mindedness and self-righteousness of certain individuals who only saw the disasters as a mere inconvenience or as a divine act against the unworthy (see link below for details).

Pamela Foreman on God, Japan, answered prayers and tsunamis.

Despite some coincidences, there is no established and definitive relationship yet between super moon and natural calamities. Nonetheless, I tend to side with the theory that it doesn’t cause or trigger earthquakes, etc. as the associated forces are too weak, and yet such minimal influence may just be enough to provide an additional “push” (towards the “tipping point”) for an event that is just waiting to happen.

In the lighter side of life, two entomologists who were personally associated with me celebrated their birthdays on March 18: Dr. Romy Raros and Ph.D. candidate Aimee Lynn Barrion-Dupo. They were my mentor and mentee, respectively. Both are married to another entomologist, and both belong to noted families of entomologists. Happy birthday to you both and best wishes on your dissertation work Aimee.

That’s the super-duper week that WASPS ;)
